USDOL Steps Up Investigation of Starbucks for Unfair Labor Practices

A federal court has enforced a subpoena by the United States Department of Labor (USDOL) against Starbucks as it seeks to investigate the company’s efforts to interfere with labor organizing among its workers. More specifically, it is seeking documents related to spending the company may have done to interfere with an organizing campaign, which may indicate the company engaged in unfair labor practices. This is in spite of efforts by Starbucks to stymie the investigation, claiming that the USDOL was overstepping its authority.

Marvel VFX Workers Form Union in Industry First

Visual effects (VFX) artists working for Marvel Studios have voted unanimously to form the first ever union including only VFX workers. The union is being organized through the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), and the election was held between August 21 and September 11. Organizers in charge of the event consider this to be an important first step in helping to improve pay and working conditions for VFX artists across the industry.

NYC Outlaws Height and Weight Discrimination

Mayor Eric Adams has signed an amendment to the New York City Human Rights Law (NYCHRL) that will make height and weight discrimination illegal within the city as of November 22, 2023. Proposed DOL Rule Would Make 3 Million Eligible for Overtime

EEOC Issues Proposed Rules for Pregnant Workers Fairness Act

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has issued new proposed regulations to implement protections put into place by the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), which was signed into law earlier this year. The regulations, if adopted, would require employers to make reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers, as well as those who recently gave birth. It also protects those suffering from medical conditions related to pregnancy and childbirth, and gives employees the right to sue if reasonable accommodations are not provided.
