Ten Signs Your Employer Might Want to Fire You

Sometimes, you will get laid off without warning, losing your job without any opportunity to prepare or protect yourself. However, in some cases, your employer may signal that they are getting ready to fire you from your job, consciously or otherwise. Here are ten potential signs your employer might be getting ready to fire you:

  1. You get reprimanded more often
    • One potential sign that your employer is considering firing you is they start formally reprimanding you more often. They may punish you for behavior that is not actually against the rules, or for behavior that others do without punishment, for example.
  2. Your performance reviews get worse
    • Another sign your employer might be looking to fire you is that your performance reviews suddenly and inexplicably get worse. Even if your work quality remains the same, this can be a sign they are laying the groundwork to justify removing you from your position.
  3. You get a reduced workload
    • Most people are typically delighted at the idea that they have less work to do. However, if your employer is deliberately reassigning your tasks to other employees or leaving you off of projects, they may be setting the stage to let you go with minimal disruption to their own operations.
  4. Your employer stops inviting you to meetings
    • By the same token, you should be concerned if your employer stops inviting you to meetings you otherwise would go to. This can mean you are getting cut out of the loop, a sign they are intending to fire you.
  5. Your employer refuses to give you time off
    • There are many reasons your employer might deny a reasonable request for time off. However, if they are typically good about granting days off and suddenly deny your requests, that can be a sign they are looking to fire you.
  6. Your employer reduces your pay or benefits
    • Not all firings are sudden and immediate. Instead, some employers will effectively try to let you go slowly, or pressure you to leave, by cutting your pay and benefits, eventually firing you if you do not quit of your own accord.
  7. Your boss will not leave you alone
    • Your employer may also be getting ready to fire you if they start to constantly pester you or micromanage you. This can indicate that they either have no confidence in your work, or want you to feel like they do not have confidence in your work, which can lead up to you being fired.
  8. Your boss gives you the cold shoulder
    • On the other hand, some employers will broadcast their intent to fire you by starting to give you the cold shoulder. They may refuse to answer emails, refuse to greet you in the hallway, or even prevent you from talking to them directly, which may indicate they are preparing to let you go.
  9. Your employer stops giving feedback
    • If your employer is typically responsive about giving feedback to your work, it can be a bad sign if their feedback stops. That may mean they are no longer concerned about the quality of your work, which in turn may mean they want to fire you.
  10. Other employees stop talking to you
    • Sometimes, you are the last person to know that you are going to lose your job. If other employees stop talking with you, it may be a sign they know you don’t have much time left at your company.
